The 1830s saw some of the most attractive gowns ever to appear in fashion history. Quirky and feminine, they still delight the eye to this day. This lovely replica gown showcases all that is best about the period. The fabric is a cotton print with a soft white ground and a delicate, detailed print of a wavy 'ribbon' stripe and floral garlands in shades of light green, fresh and pretty, and typical of fabric prints of the 1830s. The gown features what was called at the time a 'Roxaline' bodice (shaped yoke at the front, dipping to a central point, and the fabric gathered into it), slightly raised waistline, gigot sleeves tapering to the forearm and wrist (they may be worn with moderately sized sleeve puffs if you have them), a full skirt pleated and close-gathered at the back into an inset waistband. The bodice is lined in white cotton. The neckline and wrists are finished with very narrow piping, and the skirt has a deep hemline facing of white cotton. The bodice and wrists fasten with small metal hooks and thread-worked bars. Only the long internal skirt and sleeve seams are sewn by machine. Everything else is exquisitely handsewn. The gown comes with a matching pelerine, completely and beautifully handsewn. The shape is taken from an original pelerine in my collection. Please measure yourself over appropriate period undergarments (shift, stays, drawers, petticoats) to make sure that this garment will fit. The gown will fit: bust 38" (96.5cm), waist 30" (76cm), wrist 6.5" (16.5cm). Shoulder to hem of gown at front 56" (142cm). Fullest extent of gigot sleeves at upper arm approx 26" (66cm). Hem circumference 106" (269cm). NB. I have shown the gown over petticoats and with a chemisette and belt to demonstrate how it could be worn; these are not included. Only the gown and pelerine are included in the sale.
