When held upright, just turn one section of the pole clockwise (righty), like the “righty-tighty, lefty-loosey” expression. One other tip is when the pole is fully extended, there is not enough threading to tighten the unit. While holding the pole at its longest extended length, slightly shorten it by about 1/2 inch or so to ensure the threading is exposed inside the pole.
