He had sexual reassignment surgery in 2002 but retained his female reproductive organs and is having the children as his wife Nancy is unable to become pregnant. Thomas gave natural birth to Susan on June 28, 2008 and Austin on June 9, 2009. Thomas and Nancy Beatie were married in Honolulu, Hawaii in 2003. Their marriage is legally recognized nationwide.
