The BMW M3 Compact would probably have been the fastest compact sports car of its era, but never went into series production. This prototype produced over 300 bhp in 1996, making it more than 100 bhp more powerful than the standard cars in its class at that time. Consequently, high performance fans regard it as the pioneer of successful models that followed, such as the BMW 1 Series M Coupé and the BMW M2.
