Derelict mental asylum at The Park, Wacol, Before security …

Before security was beefed up, this complex was a favourite of UrbEx enthusiasts. The interior is in a very dangerous state now, with the floors gone and joists rotting. The institution has a ghoulish past, involving systematic abuse of imates. In the 1930s and 1940s, between 160 and 215 inmates died each year. An unknown number of inmates were buried on site. All records about the working of the institution, now at the state archives, have been locked under powers granted via state legislation. Why Queensland Health has fenced this building off and left it to decay, making no attempt to maintain it, I have no idea. Its not like it is hidden away - it sits on the summit of a rise, in full view of the approach road into the current psychiatric hospital complex. Because the central building is 19th century and sandstone faced, I would expect it to be heritage listed.
